Is air conditioning in a garage worthwhile?

That depends on how you use the garage. For a garage that is only used for parking, air conditioning is rarely worthwhile. For a garage that is regularly used as a workshop, hobby room, gym or home office, air conditioning is a logical investment.

A split-unit air conditioner actively cools the space and can also heat it in winter, which is ideal for a workshop you use all year round. The system is more efficient than an electric heater or convector and quieter than an industrial fan. A garage is usually less well insulated than a living space, and the better the insulation of the walls, roof and garage door, the more efficiently the air conditioner works. Where do you place the air conditioner in the garage?

The indoor unit is best mounted high on a side wall, away from the garage door. That way the airflow benefits from the whole space and the air conditioner is not directly exposed to draughts and dust coming in when the door opens.

A poorly insulated garage quickly loses cold or heat, and the air conditioner works most efficiently when the garage door is closed during use. The outdoor unit is preferably placed on the side or rear wall, not in front of the garage opening. In workshops the air is often dustier than in living spaces, and our engineers advise on the right model and the right filter solution and discuss the maintenance interval for your situation. What capacity do I need in the garage?

For a garage you use a higher factor than for a well-insulated living space. A rule of thumb of 0.05 to 0.07 kW per cubic metre is realistic, depending on the quality of the insulation. A garage of 30 m² with a ceiling height of 2.5 m then needs an air conditioner of around 3.8 to 5.3 kW. In practice, a 4 to 5 kW model is a good choice for most garages. For a poorly insulated garage or an uninsulated garage door, the required capacity may be higher.

What does air conditioning in a garage cost?

The price depends on the model, the required capacity and the complexity of the installation. In garages, extra electrical work is sometimes needed, or the distance between the indoor and outdoor unit is greater than in a standard living space.
