Buying a cassette air conditioner: what you need to know

A cassette unit is fully built into a suspended ceiling, which makes it the most aesthetic air conditioning solution for offices, restaurants and shops. Only the front panel is visible. The unit blows air in four directions at once, which gives an even temperature across the whole space. When should you choose a cassette unit?

A cassette unit is the best choice when aesthetics and air distribution are the priority. The unit disappears completely into the ceiling and is therefore invisible in the room. Because the air is distributed in four directions, a cassette unit is particularly effective in larger spaces where a wall-mounted unit does not have enough reach. Cassette units are available in two sizes: 60x60 cm and 90x90 cm. The smaller size fits in a standard suspended ceiling, while the larger size is suitable for spaces with a higher heat load. What capacity do you need?

As a rule of thumb, allow 0.04 to 0.06 kW per cubic metre of space for commercial environments, because the heat load from occupancy and equipment is higher than in a living space. For an office of 40 m² with a ceiling height of 2.6 m, that gives a model of 4 to 6 kW. Factors such as occupancy, lighting and sun exposure can adjust this. What are the advantages of a cassette unit over a wall-mounted unit?

A cassette unit offers three specific advantages over a wall-mounted unit. The unit is fully built into the ceiling and so is not visible in the room. The air is distributed in four directions at once, which gives a more even temperature in large spaces. And no wall space is needed, which gives you more freedom in how you furnish the room. A cassette unit does require a suspended ceiling. If there is none, a ceiling unit or wall-mounted unit is a better choice.
