A multi-split air conditioner connects several indoor units to a single outdoor unit. Each indoor unit cools or heats its own room independently, while you only have one outdoor unit on the façade. This is more efficient and looks neater than several separate single-split installations. How many indoor units do you need?

The number of indoor units determines which system you need. If you want to cool two rooms, choose a 2-indoor-unit system. For three rooms, choose a 3-indoor-unit system, for four rooms a 4-indoor-unit system and for five rooms a 5-indoor-unit system. The outdoor unit must have enough capacity for all connected indoor units. Our advisers calculate the right configuration free of charge during the survey.

What capacity do you need?

The total capacity of the outdoor unit must be sufficient for all connected indoor units. As a rule of thumb, allow 0.03 to 0.04 kW per cubic metre of the room to be cooled for each indoor unit. For a living room of 35 m² and a bedroom of 15 m², that comes to a total capacity of around 4 to 5 kW. In practice, you choose an outdoor unit with slightly more capacity than the sum of the indoor units, so the system also performs well at peak load. Multi-split or separate single-split systems?

In most cases a multi-split is better value if you want to cool two or more rooms. You only need one outdoor unit, which reduces installation costs and looks neater on the façade. A single-split is better if the rooms are far apart, which would make the pipe length of a multi-split very long, or if you want to cool one room now and possibly expand later without having to replace the outdoor unit.

Yes. Each indoor unit controls the temperature in its own room independently. You can set the living room to 22 degrees and the bedroom to 18 degrees at the same time. Each indoor unit has its own remote control or can be operated via an app.

Is a multi-split more economical than several separate air conditioners?

In most cases, yes. One efficient outdoor unit serving several rooms uses less energy than several separate outdoor units. In addition, the purchase and installation costs for two or more rooms are usually lower than for separate single-split systems.

How much does a multi-split air conditioner cost including installation?

A 2-split system including installation starts at € 2.800 at Aircobrabant. For a 3-split system it starts at € 3.800. The exact price depends on the models chosen and the complexity of the installation. You always receive a fixed quote in advance.
