Air conditioning for the garden room

A garden room is often too warm in summer and too cold in winter. Because of all the glass, the temperature fluctuates more than in the rest of the house. Aircobrabant installs split-unit air conditioners in garden rooms and conservatories in the Eindhoven region. That way you cool the space in summer and heat it in winter, and use your garden room all year round. Our STEK-certified engineers know which models and positions work in a room with a lot of glass.

What to look out for with air conditioning in your garden room

  • 01

    Lots of glass

Glass lets in a lot of sun. With a glass roof we choose a higher capacity.

  • 02

    Usable all year round

With heating as well, you can use the garden room in spring and autumn too.

  • 03

    Outdoor unit close by

The outdoor unit often goes right next to the garden room: short pipes and a neat finish.

All about air conditioning in your garden room

Why does a garden room get so hot or cold?

A garden room or conservatory is made largely of glass. That lets in a lot of daylight, but also creates a strong greenhouse effect. Sunlight enters through the glass and the heat stays trapped. On a sunny day the temperature in a garden room quickly rises above 30 degrees, even in spring and autumn.

In winter it works the other way round. Glass insulates less well than an ordinary wall, so the space cools down quickly. As a result, many garden rooms are only really pleasant to sit in for a few months a year. A split-unit air conditioner solves both problems: it cools in summer and heats in winter as a heat pump, so you can use the garden room all year round.

Where do you place the air conditioner in the garden room?

In a garden room there is often little solid wall available. The indoor unit is best hung on the wall that adjoins the house or on a solid section of wall in the extension. That way the air conditioner blows the air along the whole length of the room and your view of the garden stays clear.

The outdoor unit is usually placed on the side or rear facade or on a flat roof edge of the extension. Because the garden room adjoins the garden directly, our engineers pay extra attention to the noise of the outdoor unit towards the patio and neighbours. The connecting pipe is neatly hidden along the facade or through the adjoining wall. If there is no earthed socket nearby, our engineers arrange the necessary electrics.

Not sure if it is feasible? Our advisers assess the situation free of charge during the survey.

What capacity do I need in the garden room?

Because of the large glass area, a garden room needs more capacity than an ordinary room of the same size. Allow roughly 0.05 to 0.07 kW per cubic metre, depending on the amount of glass, how much sun the room gets and whether the roof is also glass. A garden room of 20 m² with a ceiling height of 2.5 m then needs an air conditioner of around 2.5 to 3.5 kW.

A south-facing garden room with a glass roof quickly calls for a model of 3.5 kW or more. A model that is too small runs at full load all the time and cannot get the room cool on warm days. Our advisers calculate the right capacity free of charge during the survey. Have a look at the available Daikin 2.5 kW air conditioners or 3.5 kW for an idea of the range.

What does air conditioning in the garden room cost?

The price depends on the model, the capacity needed and the options for placement in the extension. Aircobrabant always works with a fixed price including installation, pipework and commissioning, with no surprises afterwards.

Situation Price incl. installation Warranty
Single split garden room (standard installation) From € 1.750 Yes
Single split garden room (large glass area, higher capacity) From € 2.100 Yes
Multi split (garden room + another room) From € 2.800 Yes

Do you also want to cool the living room or another room at the same time? A multi-split system is then more cost-efficient than two separate installations.

Frequently asked questions about air conditioning in the garden room

Does an air conditioner really help in a warm garden room?

Yes, a split-unit air conditioner is the most effective way to keep a garden room cool. A fan only moves warm air around, whereas a split unit actively removes heat from the room and keeps the temperature stable. Models from Daikin and Mitsubishi Electric are designed for continuous use, even at high outdoor temperatures and a lot of direct sunlight.

Can I heat the garden room in winter with an air conditioner?

Yes. Modern split-unit air conditioners also work as a heat pump and heat the garden room efficiently, even at low outdoor temperatures. That is a lot cheaper to run than electric supplementary heating and means you can also use the garden room in the winter months.

What capacity do I need for a garden room of 20 m²?

For a garden room of 20 m² you usually need a model of 2.5 to 3.5 kW. Garden rooms with a lot of glass, a glass roof or a south-facing position need more capacity than a comparable room inside the house. Our advisers calculate the exact figure free of charge during the survey.

Where does the indoor unit go if the garden room is almost entirely glass?

Usually on the wall that adjoins the house. That wall is sturdy enough for installation, and from there the air conditioner distributes the air across the whole garden room. If there is no suitable wall, our advisers will discuss the alternatives during the survey, such as a floor-standing unit.

Do I need a permit for an air conditioner in the garden room?

For most homes no permit is needed. For listed buildings, or if the outdoor unit goes on the front of the house, this may be different. Our advisers assess this during the survey and let you know if there is anything special to be aware of.

How long does it take to install an air conditioner in the garden room?

A standard installation is usually finished in one day. Afterwards the engineer checks the system and explains how to use the air conditioner, for both cooling and heating.
