Air conditioning for your gym

A gym is one of the most demanding environments for climate control. Members exercising hard produce a lot of body heat, occupancy changes quickly and the air must be refreshed continuously. Aircobrabant installs powerful air conditioning systems from Daikin and Mitsubishi Electric in gyms in the Eindhoven region.

All about air conditioning in your gym

Why a professional air conditioning system for your gym?

Athletes perform better and for longer in a cool environment. At high temperatures performance drops, the risk of injury rises and members drop out sooner. A comfortable indoor climate therefore has a direct effect on member satisfaction and retention.

At the same time, a gym places extreme demands on the climate system. Each person exercising generates up to 500 watts of body heat, which with 30 people in the gym comes to 15 kW of extra heat on top of the heat from lighting and equipment. A gym is usually in use 12 to 16 hours a day, and the climate system must withstand continuous use without losing performance. Occupancy also varies greatly, from an empty room early in the morning to a full room at peak times, which calls for a system that responds quickly to changes in heat load. An air conditioner also supports air quality by circulating and filtering the air, although it does not replace mechanical ventilation.

Which air conditioning solution suits your gym?

The right solution depends on the size of the exercise space and the layout of the facility.

For small fitness rooms or studios of up to 100 m², a multi-split system with two to three powerful indoor units is enough for most small fitness rooms and group-class studios. Each unit covers part of the space, and together they provide even cooling. For medium-sized gyms of 100 to 300 m², a VRF system or a combination of several multi-split systems offers the capacity and flexibility for larger exercise areas with multiple zones, so that the fitness area, group classes, changing rooms and reception can be climate-controlled independently. For large sports facilities of 300 m² or more, we always recommend a tailored solution after a thorough survey.

Where do you place the air conditioner in a gym?

Placement in a gym needs extra attention to airflow and safety. People move around actively in the space, and direct airflow on people exercising hard can feel uncomfortable.

Gyms usually have high ceilings, and the indoor unit is best hung high on the wall or, with a suspended ceiling, integrated as a cassette unit. That way the air cools the space without blowing directly on people exercising. Large exercise areas need several indoor units for even cooling, and our advisers calculate the optimal number and placement for each space. Changing rooms have a higher moisture load, and for these we recommend moisture-resistant models with at least IPX4 certification. Reception and any office spaces have a lower heat load than the exercise area, and a separate indoor unit or zone prevents overcooling or undercooling in these rooms.

What capacity do I need for my gym?

For a gym you need to allow for a considerably higher heat load than for offices or shops. Occupancy is the dominant factor.

Space Floor area Recommended capacity
Small fitness room 60 m² 7.0 to 10.0 kW
Group-class studio 80 m² 10.0 to 14.0 kW
Large fitness room 200 m² 20.0 to 30.0 kW
Changing room 20 m² 2.0 to 3.0 kW

These are guidelines based on average occupancy. Our advisers calculate the exact figure, including peak occupancy and equipment heat, free of charge during the survey.

What does air conditioning for a gym cost?

The price depends on the system, the capacity needed and the complexity of the installation. For larger sports facilities we always work with a tailored quote after a survey.

Situation Price incl. installation Warranty
Multi split small fitness room From € 2.800 Yes
Multi split medium-sized gym From € 4.800 Yes
VRF system large sports facility Tailored quote Yes

Frequently asked questions about air conditioning for a gym

What is the ideal temperature in a gym?

For a fitness room a temperature of 16 to 20 degrees is usually recommended. At lower temperatures people perform better and the risk of overheating is smaller. For high-intensity group classes the ideal temperature is at the lower end of this range. The exact setting depends on the type of exercise and the wishes of your members.

Can an air conditioner improve the air quality in a gym?

An air conditioner circulates and filters the air, which contributes to better air quality. However, an air conditioner does not replace mechanical ventilation. For a gym, sufficient fresh air through a ventilation system is a requirement, and the air conditioning and ventilation complement each other. Our advisers discuss this during the survey.

How long does it take to install air conditioning in a gym?

That depends on the size of the installation. A multi-split for a small fitness room is usually finished in one to two days. For larger systems with several zones, the installation can take several days. We plan the installation so that the gym is disrupted as little as possible.

Can the installation be carried out outside opening hours?

Yes, by arrangement. For gyms that are fully in use during the day, we schedule the installation early in the morning, late in the evening or on closing days. We agree this in the schedule in advance.

How often does an air conditioner in a gym need maintenance?

For gyms we recommend two maintenance visits per year, before the summer season and halfway through the year. Because of the high occupancy and the sweaty air, filters get dirty faster than in offices or shops. Aircobrabant offers tailored maintenance contracts for business customers.

Is a permit needed for air conditioning in a gym?

In most situations no permit is needed. If outdoor units are placed on the front facade, or for listed buildings, this may be different. Our advisers assess this during the survey.
