What is a multi-split air conditioner?

A multi-split air conditioner consists of one outdoor unit connected to several indoor units in different rooms. Each indoor unit controls the temperature in its own room independently, so the living room can be at 21 degrees while the bedroom is set to 18.

The big advantage over several separate single-split installations is that you only need one outdoor unit. That saves space on the facade, looks neater and is usually cheaper when you have two or more rooms than separate systems. Multi-split systems from Daikin and Mitsubishi Electric are available for 2, 3, 4 or 5 indoor units as wall-mounted units, floor-standing units or cassette units, depending on the room and your preference.

Multi-split or separate systems?

In most cases a multi-split system is the smarter choice if you want to cool two or more rooms, but it is not always the best option.

Choose multi-split if you want to cool or heat two or more rooms, if you only want one outdoor unit on the facade, or if the rooms are relatively close together. Separate single-split systems are better if the rooms are far apart, which would make the pipework of a multi-split very long, if you want to cool one room now and possibly expand later, or if the difference in capacity between the rooms is large.

How is a multi-split system installed?

With a multi-split, a connecting pipe runs from each indoor unit to the central outdoor unit. The more indoor units, the more pipes run through the home. Careful planning of the pipe routes is therefore essential, ideally as short as possible and as little visible as possible.

Our engineers plan the routes so that pipes are hidden in cable trunking or, where possible, chased into the wall. The outdoor unit needs enough space for air circulation and is preferably placed on the side or rear facade. The outdoor unit needs its own power supply, and our engineers arrange this if necessary. The capacity of the outdoor unit must be sufficient for all connected indoor units, and our advisers calculate the right configuration based on the rooms, insulation values and use.

The right configuration depends on the number of rooms, the size of each room and the quality of the home’s insulation.
