Health and heat
A home that is too hot can cause various health problems. Here are some ways in which excessive indoor heat can affect your health:
- Dehydration: High temperatures can lead to excessive sweating, which can result in dehydration if you do not drink enough fluids.
- Heatstroke: This is a serious condition that can occur when the body is no longer able to regulate its temperature. Symptoms can include dizziness, nausea, headache and loss of consciousness.
- Sleep disorders: An environment that is too warm can make it difficult to fall asleep or stay asleep, which can lead to fatigue and reduced performance during the day.
- Worsening of chronic conditions: People with chronic conditions such as heart disease, breathing problems and diabetes can be extra affected by high temperatures, which can worsen their symptoms.
- Heat exhaustion: This is a less severe form of heat-related illness, but can still be dangerous. Symptoms include heavy sweating, weakness, fatigue, dizziness and nausea.
- Increased humidity: A warm environment can also lead to increased humidity, which can encourage mould growth and cause breathing problems, especially in people with asthma or allergies.
In warm weather it is important to take measures to keep your home cool, such as using fans, air conditioning, closing curtains during the hottest hours of the day and drinking enough water to stay hydrated.
