Buying a cabinet air conditioner: what you need to know

A cabinet air conditioner is a free-standing indoor unit that is placed on the floor and is suitable for large spaces with a high heat load. Unlike a floor-standing unit, a cabinet unit has a larger casing and a higher capacity, which is why it is mainly used in commercial settings such as server rooms, production areas and large offices. Aircobrabant only supplies cabinet units from Daikin and Mitsubishi Electric, brands we have been installing for more than 20 years for private customers and businesses in Eindhoven and the surrounding area.

When should you choose a cabinet unit?

A cabinet unit is the best choice for spaces with a high heat load where a wall-mounted or ceiling unit does not have enough capacity. That is the case with server rooms, production areas, large open-plan offices or industrial settings. The cabinet unit stands freely in the room and needs no special structural changes to the wall or ceiling, which makes installation in existing buildings easier than, for example, a ducted unit. The unit blows air horizontally into the room and is available in higher capacities than most other indoor unit types.

Which capacity do you need?

Cabinet units are available in higher capacities than standard wall-mounted units, generally from 7 kW and going up to more than 14 kW. The capacity you need depends on the heat produced by the equipment or occupancy in the room. For server rooms, as a rule of thumb the cooling capacity must be at least equal to the total electrical power drawn by all the equipment. For other rooms, allow 0.05 to 0.07 kW per cubic metre because of the higher heat load. Our advisers calculate the exact capacity free of charge during the survey.

What are the advantages of a cabinet unit over other types?

A cabinet unit combines high capacity with flexible placement. The unit stands freely in the room and does not need to be fixed to a wall or ceiling, which makes installation in existing buildings easier. Compared with a ceiling unit or cassette unit, a cabinet unit is easier to move when the room is rearranged. The downside is that the unit stands visibly in the room, which is less desirable in settings where appearance is important.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a cabinet unit and a floor-standing air conditioner?

A floor-standing unit is compact and suitable for smaller living spaces or offices. A cabinet unit has a larger casing and a higher capacity, which makes it suitable for larger spaces with a higher heat load, such as server rooms and production areas. Also take a look at our floor-standing units if you want to cool a smaller room.

Which capacity do I need for my room?

Cabinet units are available from 7 kW. The exact capacity you need depends on the heat produced in the room. During the survey, our advisers calculate the right capacity for you free of charge.

How much does a cabinet air conditioner cost including installation?

The price depends on the model you choose and the capacity required. Because of their higher capacity and specifications, cabinet units are generally more expensive than standard wall-mounted units. After the survey, Aircobrabant draws up an itemised quote with a fixed price. Get in touch for a no-obligation consultation.
